Whales are aquatic mammals which belong to the order Cetacean; they can either be dolphins or porpoises. Whales are sub-divided into two which are: Baleen (Humpback Whales) and toothed (Blue whales) whales. Baleen whales possess a comb-like fringe, known as a baleen, on the upper jaw, which is used to filter plankton including small fish and crustaceans. Baleen whales are said to be the largest species of whales. Toothed whales have teeth and feed on fishes, squids, other whales and marine mammals.
However, whales have little hair, they are warm blooded. They breathe air into the lungs and feed their young offspring milk just as the same as every other mammal. They propel themselves through water with the aid of tail fins.
Many species amongst whales have a fin on their backs called as a dorsal fin.
Whales breathe through blowholes, which can be found on the top of the head so the mammal can remain submerged (partially immersed in water).
Mating season: varies depending on the species period of pregnancy (gestation): 9-15 month, depending on the species.
Number of offspring: 1 calf Period of nursing is quite (takes about more than a year for many species) which is related with a strong bond between the mother and young ones. Thus the mother protects the young against predators and also in order for them to get use to the wild.
